Every collection begins the same way: a forgotten shoebox, a dusty filing cabinet, a folder of unmarked slides inherited from a stranger. Our editors spend weeks — sometimes months — with each acquisition, scanning at archival resolution, transcribing faded pencil captions, and tracing the photographer's movements through marginalia and postmarks.
